An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study of prospective data collection was carried out, whose objective was to determine the correlation between total serum bilirubin and transcutaneous bilirubin in newborns admitted to the neonatology area of the Maternidad Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia University Hospital. The study group consisted of a total of 30 neonates with a request for laboratory examination of serum bilirubins, who were jointly taken transcutaneous thoracic and frontal bilirubin with no more than 30 minutes of difference. In this, it was obtained that the mean values of Bttf, Bttc and the gold standard were 15.56mg/dl, 14.53mg/dl and 12.89mg/dl respectively, and the Pearson correlations were the following: r=0.71 for the transcutaneous measures, r=0.91 for frontal measurement and serum bilirubin, and r=0.78 for Bttc and bilirubin in blood. The discrepancy between Bttf/serum was 2.67mg/dl and between Bttc/serum of 1.64mg/dl. Therefore, it was concluded that serum and transcutaneous bilirubin values have a good correlation and can be used as a diagnostic method.
