dc.descriptionThis article corresponds to an analysis of the novel La vorágine, by José Eustacio Rivera. First, a context of the work (literary and historical) is presented. Then, it is explained that what is narrated by Arturo Cova is not a trip, but an anti-journey: a continuous and forced displacement. In addition, a minimal narratological scheme is applied to analyze the trajectory of the main character and, subsequently, the determinism evidenced in the book is conceptualized in its environmental, sociological and psychological manifestations, and its presence is identified in the novel. As a methodology, quotes and facts are referred to that justify the thesis that Arturo Cova is dragged by circumstances; which means that it is a deterministic displacement. He, instead of acting, reacts. He gets carried away by circumstances. The swirl drags him to the bottom. At the end of the work, it can be seen that both the jungle and chance and the others redefined him, reformed (deformed?) him, rebuilt him. There are no ideals, there is no present or future: “the jungle devoured him.”en-US
dc.descriptionEl presente artículo corresponde a un análisis de la novela La vorágine, de José Eustasio Rivera. En primer lugar, se presenta un contexto de la obra (literario e histórico). Luego, se explica que lo narrado por Arturo Cova no es un viaje, sino un antiviaje: un desplazamiento continuo y forzoso. Se aplica un esquema narratológico mínimo para analizar la trayectoria del personaje principal y, posteriormente, se conceptualiza el determinismo evidenciado en el libro, en sus manifestaciones ambiental, sociológica y psicológica, y se identifica su presencia en la novela. Como metodología, se refieren citas y hechos que justifican la tesis de que Arturo Cova es arrastrado por las circunstancias; por lo cual se trata de un desplazamiento determinista. Él, en lugar de actuar, reacciona. Se deja llevar por las circunstancias. El remolino lo arrastra hacia el fondo. Al final de la obra, se puede constatar que tanto la selva como el azar y los otros lo redefinieron, lo reformaron (¿deformaron?), lo reconstruyeron. Ya no hay ideales, ya no hay presente ni futuro: “la selva lo devoró”.es-ES
