dc.descriptionPenaeus monodon, is a shrimp introduced in Dominican Republic in 1985 by “Isabel Acuacultura” project, in the Atlantic coast of the country and from this to the “Marine Shrimp Pilot Project” in 1992, in the Caribbean coast. Floods produced by high sea level in the former and Hurricane Gordon in 1994 in the latter, caused escapes of postlarvae and adults into the natural environment. In 2019, adults and juveniles were identified in artisanal fishing in the Bay of Samaná. This work analyzes the distribution and abundance of this species in wild habitats in the country, by reviewing literature, interviews, fishing records from fishmongers and landings; Ten individuals were measured and weighed using a 0.01 mm caliper and a 0.01 g precision scale, respectively. They were sexed using the presence of the thelic and the petasma. The presence of P. monodon was confirmed on the Atlantic and Caribbean coasts based on the reports of fisheries landings recorded for Samaná. The cephalothorax length ranges of the observed individuals are within the optimum for reproduction. The species shares the estuarine zone of Samaná estuarine coastline with the country’s native marine shrimps, so it’s possible impact on local biodiversity must be monitored.en-US
dc.descriptionEl Penaeus monodon, es un camarón que fue introducido en República. Dominicana en 1985 por el proyecto “Isabel Acuacultura”, costa atlántica del país y de ésta en 1992 al “Proyecto Piloto de Camarones Marinos” costa caribeña. Inundaciones producidas por el alto nivel del mar en el primero y el huracán Gordon en 1994 en el segundo, provocaron escapes de postlarvas y adultos al medio natural. En el 2019 se identificaron adultos y juveniles en la pesca artesanal en la bahía de Samaná. Este trabajo analiza la distribución de esta especie en hábitats silvestres del país, mediante la revisión de literaturas, entrevistas, registros de pescaderías y desembarques; se midieron y pesaron diez individuos utilizando un vernier de 0.01 mm y una balanza de 0.01 g de precisión, fueron sexados utilizando la presencia del télico y el petasma. Se confirmó la presencia del monodon en las costas atlántica y caribeña, basada en los reportes de desembarco pesquero registrados en Samaná; los rangos de longitud del cefalotórax de los individuos observados están dentro del óptimo de reproducción. La especie cohabita con camarones nativos en el litoral de la Bahía de Samaná, por lo que se debe monitorear su posible impacto en la biodiversidad local.es-ES
