This text aims to analyze the set of fortifications built in the Hispanic Caribbean from the arrival of Christopher Columbus until the middle years of the 16th century. Although the examples are scarce when compared to those executed in other later chronologies, it will be posible to understand the degree of assimilation of the military experiences of the late middle ages, adapted to the Caribbean orography as a form of repression of local and foreign threats. A deductive methodology has been used to demonstrate the hypothesis that Hispanic defenses in the sixteenth century had a degree of development proportional to defensive needs. The text aims to revalue a heritage that currently shows a deterioration. The final objetive of this contribution is to vindicate the role of the first Spanish defenses in the Caribbean, in a period in which the protection strategy began to be forged in a space where geopolitics was present until the 19th century.
