El presente estudio descriptivo, de corte transversal retrospectivo de datos, se realizó para determinar la frecuencia del síndrome metabólico en niños y adolescentes obesos con edades entre 1-15 años, en la consulta del Servicio de Endocrinología del Hospital Infantil Dr. Robert Reid Cabral, en Santo Domingo, República Dominicana, abarcando el período comprendido desde enero de 2010 hasta diciembre de 2015. Se evaluaron 6 expedientes con diagnóstico de síndrome metabólico según el criterio de la OMS. El 83.3% se encuentra en el rango de edad de 11-15 años, todas femeninas, la mayoría procedente de la provincia de Santo Domingo. La hipertensión estuvo presente en el 16.7% de los casos, la acanthosis nigricans en el 83.3%, la hiperglicemia en ayuno en un 33.3%, la insulina en ayuno elevada (mayor o igual a 15) fue de un 83.3%, la insulinoresistencia con índice HOMA mayor de 3% de los todos los casos, la dislipidemia con niveles de triglicéridos altos apareció en un 66.7% y el colesterol total en el 16.7%, con LDL elevado. Finalmente, la diabetes tipo 2 confirmada con HbA1c, mayor o igual a 6.5%, fue diagnosticada en un 16.7% de los casos. En conclusión, solo el 2.7% de los obesos estudiados presentaron síndrome metabólico.
A descriptive, cross - sectional study with retrospective collection of data was performed. To determine the presence of metabolic syndrome in obese patients aged 1-15 years in the outpatient of the Endocrinology Service of Children’s Hospital Dr. Robert Reid Cabral, In Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic from January 2010 to December 2015. Six cases with a diagnosis of Metabolic Syndrome according to WHO criteria were evaluated. 83.3 percent are in the age range of 11-15 years, all female most of the province of Santo Domingo. Hypertension was present in 16.7% acanthosis nigricans (83.3%) hyperglycemia in fasting (33.3%). Fasting Insulin, greater than or equal to 15 was 83.3 percent. Insulin-resistance with HOMA index greater than 3 in 100% of the cases. Dyslipidemia with high triglyceride levels 66.7 percent and total cholesterol 16.7 percent, with elevated LDL. Diabetes type 2 confirmed with HbA1c greater than or equal to 6.5% was 16.7% of the cases. Conclusion: Only 2.7% of the obese studied presented metabolic syndrome.
