2023-09-172023-09-17https://repositoriobiblioteca.intec.edu.do/handle/123456789/6187This text aims to analyze the set of fortifications built in the Hispanic Caribbean from the arrival of Christopher Columbus until the middle years of the 16th century. Although the examples are scarce when compared to those executed in other later chronologies, it will be posible to understand the degree of assimilation of the military experiences of the late middle ages, adapted to the Caribbean orography as a form of repression of local and foreign threats. A deductive methodology has been used to demonstrate the hypothesis that Hispanic defenses in the sixteenth century had a degree of development proportional to defensive needs. The text aims to revalue a heritage that currently shows a deterioration. The final objetive of this contribution is to vindicate the role of the first Spanish defenses in the Caribbean, in a period in which the protection strategy began to be forged in a space where geopolitics was present until the 19th century.El presente ensayo pretende analizar el conjunto de fortificaciones construidas en el Caribe hispano desde la llegada de Cristóbal Colón hasta los años centrales del siglo xvi. Aunque los ejemplos son escasos si se comparan con los ejecutados en otras cronologías posteriores, se podrá comprender el grado de asimilación de las experiencias militares desde fines de la Edad Media, adaptadas a la orografía caribeña como forma de represión de las amenazas locales y extranjeras. Se ha utilizado una metodología deductiva para demostrar la hipótesis de que las defensas hispanas en el siglo xvi tuvieron un grado de desarrollo proporcional a las necesidades defensivas. En definitiva, el texto pretende revalorizar un patrimonio que en la actualidad presenta un notable deterioro debido a la superposición de otras estructuras en fechas más recientes y que han desvirtuado los antiguos proyectos.
